Water Wine, 2024

When I was at the church listening to the sermon, unable to focus too much on what was being preached, I found myself flipping through different chapters of the Bible, searching for something that would speak to me in that moment. My eyes landed on a verse: “…though the servants who had drawn the water knew” (John 2:9).

In the story of Jesus turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana, it wasn’t the master of the banquet or even the guests who understood what had happened—it was the servants, the ones who obeyed and acted in faith. They were the ones who witnessed the miracle manifest, who knew where the water-turned-wine had come from.

“...though the servants who had drawn the water knew.”

I am learning more and more that submitting our thoughts and experiences before God is one of the greatest challenges of faith but a joyful one. Even now, as I write this during one of the most uncertain seasons of my life, I find myself longing to witness God’s work with my own eyes. Like the servants who obediently filled the jars to the brim without fully understanding, I am striving to walk forward in faith. But perhaps there is something even more important to remember than our obedience. That it is to remember that the One who calls us is the One who does the work.

By the Word, it is all done.

John 2:5-10

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
