Kindling (TOC), 2023

I was having a conversation with Eddie, a stage 4 cancer survivor, when he said: “Yes, cancer made me cry, but it didn’t make me quit. I found the ‘can’ in cancer, and now I use my test as a testimony to pursue my dream and help others do the same.”

When I heard his words, I sensed a steady fire within him. Not loud or dramatic, but constant and alive. His experience with cancer did not diminish him; it refined him. There was passion in his voice, and a deep love for people that felt sincere and enduring.

That encounter led me to title this work Kindling. I hope it may offer even the smallest spark to those who see it. The size of the spark does not matter. Even a small hope can begin to move what once felt like a mountain.

Now, Eddie is dedicating his life as a motivational speaker, college professor, pastor, and best-selling author—using his story to encourage others, to strengthen faith, and to help people find hope in the midst of their own mountains.

2 Corinthians 12:9

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. ”Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
